Modifications to Multiplex Transmitters

If you use your Multiplex 3030 or 4000 series transmitters with the optional neckstrap and transmitter support arms, you will find that the transmitter balances in the wrong position. i.e. the transmitter will want to fall forwards.

Method 1

The optional support arms as supplied by Multiplex
Barry Cole, came up with this simple modification to the set which moves the balance point forward and transforms its handling. It works so well that it has been adopted by many R/C flyers and has been the subject of an article in the RCM&E magazine.

The modification requires a new arm strap attachment points being secured to the original bracket. This new arm is made to fold down so that the set can still be stowed away after flying

The plans for the modifications are on this page at reduced size, but if you save them to your computer, they will print out in higher resolution.

Method 2

Bill Scott sent in his solution to the same problem and writes...

"It is 6mm aluminium tubing. Gently bent to 90 degrees, flattened on the end and drilled for the neckstrap.

The tube is slid over the existing arm and marked for the hole. Take it off and drill through. Slide back on and pass a bolt (or your own method of securing) through and tighten it.

I can still fold the arms down far enough to put in my case and it just opens up for use."

A NEW TRANSMITTER AERIAL

compare the different sizes of the standard Multiplex aerial and the shorter Becker

Another modification, which is also available from Barry Cole, is a replacement aerial from a German company called Becker. The Becker aerials were originally brought in by Tony Baker after reading a comparison review in the German Mag FMT.

The black MPX (Rubber Ducky) Aerial came out as only 65% as efficient as the 3m long steel MPX aerial but the Becker double base loaded ones were rated as 96 to 98% as efficient as the best steel MPX one and therefore still give perfect range.

With one of these aerials fitted, you will find less difficulty in launching a glider off the slope, where sometimes the aerial gets in the way, particularly when launching the larger scale models. Even on flat field flying, where range is more of a premium, the lack of an extensive aerial in front of you can make flying more pleasant. and reassuring.
